Winter Reads…

So it has once again turned cold. Winter might be over soon, but it sure doesn’t feel like it at the moment. It is currently pouring with rain, gloomy grey skies and news reports reporting that there is major flooding happening all over the place with no let up for at least the next 2 or 3 days. Yay! Not! Did I mention it is bloody cold?

When it rains, reading is a must! What else is there better to do on a cold, miserable day? Nothing. Curling up with a good book with a blanket and a mug of hot chocolate is perfection to any book nerd, book lover or reader anywhere in the world.

So my question to you all is: what are you all reading at the moment? What are you planning on reading over the next few days as the rain sets in?

I am reading ‘One Would Think The Deep’ by Claire Zorn. This beach side based book is the perfect remidy for this miserable weather because it is set around a sparkling waterfront suburb, where the main character surf. I’ve only just started but I’m sure it’s going to be a great read.

Book Review – The First Third

The First Third / Will Kostakis / Penguin Teen Australia / 2013 / ISBN 9780143568179/ 247 pages / Young Adult

Life is made up of three parts: in the first third you’re embarrassed by your family; in the second, you make a family of your own; and in the end, you just embarrass the family you’ve made. That’s how Billy’s grandmother explains it anyway. She’s given him her bucket list (cue embarrassment), and now it’s his job to glue their family back together. No pressure or anything.

Will Kostakis is a genius when it comes to writing something he knows. This book The First Third is a great easy read for anyone with a family. I really enjoyed this book just like I enjoyed The Sidekicks by Kostakis because I was able to relate to it so easily. The easy of the structures, the building of the characters throughout the story that build to make an epic story and the familiarity of it all makes for an excellent read. This is the type of book you should read when you want to learn about other cultures, families and even yourself. I brought a tear to my eye in one bit at the end in particular. I cried out in laughter in the middle of the night thanks to the great jokes within the book. If I didn’t know any better Kostakis is talking about my Nonna in this book.

If you are looking for something to tug on your hear string, give you a boost of love or a hit of family drama than this is the book for you.

I give this book 4.1 out of 5 booky stars!

Book Review – The Things I Didn’t Say

The Things I Didn’t Say / Kylie Fornasier / Penguin Teen Australia / ISBN 9780143573630 / 311 pages / Young Adult

the-things-i-didn-t-say
http://www.booktopia.com.au/the-things-i-didn-t-say-kylie-fornasier/prod9780143573630.html

After losing her best friend that night, Piper Rhodes changes school, determined that her final year will be different. She will be different. Then she meets West: school captain, star soccer player, the boy everyone talks about. Despite her fear of losing everything all over again, they fall in love without Piper ever speaking one word to West. But can a love mapped by silence last?

This is the first book by Kylie Fornasier that I have read and I think that it is a great young adult novel. The story follows a girl called Piper as she struggles with teenage life, school, friendship and her own personal issue of Selective Mutism. Not being able to talk in public to people she doesn’t really know or have a relationship with makes life for Piper just a little bit more challenging than her fellow class mates. After unintentionally hurting her best friend, Piper makes the decision to move schools. In moving schools Piper is opened to new challenges, including falling in love with the schools most liked and popular boy. Falling in love with West, without speaking brings up more insecurities and challenges for Piper who doesn’t know if what she has with West is going to last.

I finished this book in four days. When I started it I knew that I was going to love it. I thought that a certain thing would happen in the book and I am glad that it did not, because I think it would have ruined it. You will be able to guess what I thought was going to happen at the end of the book when you read it for yourself, because it feels like it is going to be predictable, but I will tell you right now that The Things I Didn’t Say is anything but predictable. It is cleaver, it is smart, and it is everything I wanted in a love storied teenage romance young adult books and more. There are great elements of photography and nature that really round out the book. The different yet so connectable family that Piper has is great and a welcome relief after reading lot of young adult books with dysfunctional families. The element of Selective Mutism and how much detail and research that has gone into it makes it feel real, it makes you feel for Piper but also root for Piper. Kylie has done a great deal of work on it and it has really paid off. The love story between Piper and West is so down to earth, so realistic, it had me cry out for more in the hopes of living through their relationship for just a little bit longer.

The level of realism and truth in this book is enlightening. The way Kylie Fornasier writes allows anyone with the ability to read to be able to connect with the story that is trying to be told. The structure of the story to the sentence structure is great. The themes, the characters, the events that take place are so well picked and placed that I cannot talk about this book anymore. It is great, it is awesome, it will make you cry and laugh and more than anything else, make you at least empathic towards people you do or even don’t know properly. Go out and read this book, you will regret it if you miss out on this story.

I give this book 4.8 out of 5 booky stars!

Dance Academy by Meredith Costain.

This ABC book is a great television show that was made. I haven’t read the books that were written but I have watched and own every episode of the show. I think it is classic Australian television not only about dancing but also about friendship, lose, hurting, family and hope. It is a great television show and there should be more of them.

Currently Reading

Last night I finished reading The Sidekicks by Will Kostakis. It is such a great book. All three character point of views in the book is from boys,  high school aged boys and it is the first time I have read anything from a males perspective and especially in a Young Adult novel. It was great. I can’t wait to meet the author this afternoon. I will be reviewing it and posting it here within a week or two.

The new book I have just started reading is called Yellow by Megan Jacobson. I will also be meeting the author this afternoon and can’t wait. I don’t think I will be close to finishing the book before then, but I already know with the small amount I have read this morning, that it too is going to a be great and different young adult book than anything I have read before.

I am loving all of this Australian young adult books that I seem to be reading at the moment.
